Man sets himself on Fire & Tightly Hug Politician during TV Debate(Photos)

A television debate in India ended in horror when a spectator set himself alight before embracing a politician, leaving both men fighting for their lives.
The man, named by police as Durgesh Kumar Singh, emerged from a crowd of about 150 onlookers, doused himself in petrol then grabbed the local leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Kamruzzama Fauji.

Nigerian pleads guilty to U.S. charges of aiding al Qaeda group

Reuters reports:
33 year old Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi (pictured above) yesterday Tuesday April 29th pleaded guilty to terror charges in a US court. The Nigerian citizen is accused of providing material support to an al Qaeda affiliate, and participating in its media and recruitment campaigns.

US prosecutors said that, from January 2010 to August 2011, Babafemi left Nigeria to Yemen twice to meet with some leaders of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, known as AQAP.

"The defendant traveled to Yemen to put himself at the disposal of a violent terrorist organization that has repeatedly demonstrated its determination to inflict bodily and economic harm on the US and its citizens," A U.S. Attorney said in a statement.

Prosecutors also say the al Qaeda leaders paid Babafemi, also known as 'Ayatollah Mustapha' almost $9,000 to recruit English-speaking people from Nigeria that would write for their online magazine called 'Inspire'. He was extradited August last year from Nigeria to the US.

Delta Bursary Fraud Whistleblower Handed Over To Delta State Government Officials By Police

An ex-student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Mr. Ambrose Ezeanwani, who exposed a racket in the students’ bursary scheme in Delta state was handed over to men from the Delta State Government yesterday afternoon after days of illegal detention in Lagos. Police officers in Sabo Station handed him over after the Delta State officials visited to ask for his transfer to Asaba, Delta
State where he will be most likely tortured and “tried” for revealing the fraud perpetrated by officials of the state.

Ezeanwani was President of the National Association of Delta State Students Union at the University of Lagos. During his tenure, he revealed that the bursary system was fraught with fraud, which he said was being perpetrated by men in the scholarship board in Delta State.

 Ezeawani alleged that the irregularities surfaced since the current Commissioner for Higher Education in the State, Mr. Hope Eghagha came on board. Mr. Eghagha a former professor at the University of lagos was a former newspaper columnist and critic of the Delta state government before bagging a government appointment a few years ago.

Ezeawani claims that Eghagha’s office had created a system for students bursary application where non-existing students are awarded bursary by the state. He said in his investigation, which the UNILAG students’ records office corroborated, the names published as “approved” for bursary awards every year were non-existent in the Institution’s official records. Ezeawani further stated that his research discovered that the office of the Commissioner for Higher Education in Delta State led by Eghagha had generated about 23,000 fake students and bank accounts and sorts codes throughout institutions across the country to siphon bursary funds while publishing fake names of beneficiaries in the print media every year. Although few genuine names of students are mixed in the published bursary approval list every year, it is observed that most of the genuine students are shut out of the scheme while non-existing names are paraded.

Ambrose had led series of protest marches calling for investigations into the scam, however, the Economic and financial crimes Commission EFCC) to whom he directed his protests did nothing to investigate the fraud.

Last Wednesday on his way to Federal college of Education (Technical) Akoka, some men in mufti pulled up in front of him and attempted forcing him into their car. Ezeawani said he resisted and headed for the police station in Sabo instead. The men followed him and asked the police to hand him over but the police refused. The men apparently sent by the Delta State government then asked that Ezeawani be detained for them to go and prepare documents from Asaba to facilitate his hand over. He has now been handed over yesterday to policemen from Asaba who are suspected to be doing the bidding of the Delta State officials.

Woman Dies While Trying to Rescue Fiance from Burning Flat

A 23-year-old architect, Sophie Rosser, died while trying to rescue her fiance, 28-year-old Oscar Silva, from a burning block of flats in East London that they lived in, which was on fire.

Rosser, who had just returned from a party early one morning, saw the fire, and called Silva on the phone to alert him to evacuate the building, as he had been asleep at the time.

He did not respond, and so she dashed into the building to try to save him. But unknown to her, Silva had taken the elevator to another floor in an attempt to escape the fire. They missed each other in the midst of the chaos, but paramedics were able to rescue him.

Rosser on the other hand, was unconscious when paramedics found her. She later passed away.

Protesting Polytechnic Students and Lecturers get Teargassed by Abuja Police

 

 

There are reports that the ongoing protest by striking lecturers of Nigeria’s polytechnics and colleges of education at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, has been disrupted by the police.

 

The peaceful protest, which was organized to show displeasure at the Federal Government’s handling of the strike which is about 11 months old now was disrupted on Tuesday morning when police officers fired tear-gas at the protesters, made up of lecturers and students.

Policeman Assaults &Brutalises 8-Year-Old Girl

Residents of Olufowobi Street, Ketu, Lagos, were thrown into confusion after an eight-year-old girl, Amarachi Abakwam, was found tied up and brutalised under the bed of a policeman attached to Police Mobile Force 22.
It was learnt that the policeman, Augustine Gbuchenge, with Force number 400823, lived in the same compound with Amarachi’s family.



The father of the victim, Patrick, told reporters that on the fateful day he had been looking everywhere for his daughter until they discovered her under Gbuchenge’s bed.

The founder of the Liberty Foundation Gospel Ministries is said to have been deported about 2 weeks ago after residents of the UK reportedly signed a petition declaring her dangerous to the nation’s children due to her history with so-called child witches.
Ukpabio was said to be in the UK to propagate her beliefs and save those at risk of wizardry. The self-acclaimed apostle spoke about about the reports in a recent interview with Yes! Magazine.

 “They (the atheists) came to London to disrupt my programme – and they’ve been using one Modupe to spread falsehood about me. My lawyers have written to her and we shall soon meet in court”.

Nollywood Icon, Amaka Igwe Dies Aged 51

Amaka Igwe has died today, as reported by the President of Actor Film of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberesima after a long battle with asthma.

‘She suffered an asthma attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital after initial interventions had failed. She passed on before getting to the hospital’, as it was said in the official statement released earlier this morning.
According to the statement by the official spokesperson of Amaka Igwe studios the incident happened in Enugu, where she was for the preparations of pre-productions for new soap, accompanied by her husband.
Amaka Igwe was 51 and She is survived by her husband of 21 years Charles Igwe, three children, an aged mother, siblings and a large extended family.
She was a famous Nigerian film producer, director and writer, the owner of Amaka Igwe Film Studios. Amaka Igwe was one of the most notorious figures in Nollywood, being the producer of Rattle Snake, Violated, Checkmate and House of Commotion.
She was the member of the International Board of Trustees of the African Movie Academy Awards, the
AMAA and one of the jury. Moreover, the was the conductor of annual university challenge for students of Nigerian universities that competed for a prize in film – Raymond Dokpezi prize.
She was an advocate of the future of Nigerian film making as well as a true fan of its history.

Wife 'used minivan to Hit husband as he walked along street.

A 21-year-old Virginia woman is facing attempted murder charges for allegedly driving into her husband with a minivan and then beating him at the roadside.

Concerned motorists started to call police at about 10.30pm on Sunday to report a woman kicking a man next to a wrecked vehicle.

Quaneisha Torres is accused of driving her minivan in the wrong direction along a one-way street, before smashing into her husband who was on the edge of the road.

Witnesses claimed that as the 31-year-old, who has not been named, tried to crawl away from the wreckage, a 5ft 4in woman, who weighed about 200lb, began kicking him.

Stomach-churning photographs of 44-year-old Sara Mapelli with 12,000 bees crawling on her naked chest has been creating a buzz on the internet. In the images, the self-proclaimed 'Bee Queen' from Oregon is seen calmly wandering around outdoors, with thousands of hairy-bodied insects covering her torso up to her neck, in turn creating a 'natural blouse'.

Microsoft acquires Nokia devices and Services business

Microsoft will complete the acquisition of Nokia's Devices & Services business on Friday. The development was confirmed by independent statements issued by the two companies on Monday.
Nokia said "that it expects the transaction whereby the company will sell substantially all of its Devices & Services business to Microsoft to close on April 25, 2014. The transaction is now subject only to certain customary closing conditions."

  Ariana Aitzhan was carrying a Samsung Galaxy S2 model in her pocket while playing in the garden in the Kazakhstan capital Astana when her parents suddenly heard her screaming.

They rushed out to see the remains of the phone on the floor with the girl’s friends saying it had exploded in her pocket. Ariana was immediately rushed to the hospital leaving her parents shocked at the extent of her injuries as she required a skin transplant.

The National Conference committee on Civil Society, Labour and Sports, one of the ten committees at the on-going conference in Abuja, has sacked its chairperson, Bola Ogunrimade for absenteeism and has been replaced with her deputy, Issa Aremu.
